The European Commission has put encryption high on the agenda of EU policymakers, with ongoing files such as the Digital Services Act and the ePrivacy Regulation as well as recent CJEU rulings highlighting encryption as a critical enabler of privacy and data protection. Nonetheless, some governments have recently called on companies to create backdoors to their encrypted devices and services to provide law enforcement with exceptional access.
