eco Survey on 1 May: Digitalisation Improves Work-Life Balance

  • Around two out of three Germans believe digitalisation improves work-life balance
  • Families, in particular, say they benefit from flexible working options through mobile working
  • “Companies that offer flexible working models with the help of digitalisation are more successful in attracting skilled workers”.

The digitalisation of the workplace – for example through mobile working options – can contribute to improving the work-life balance. This is the view of around two out of three Germans (61.2 per cent), according to a representative Civey survey commissioned by eco – Association of the Internet Industry on the occasion of Labour Day on 1 May. Families, in particular, benefit from the opportunities to increase flexibility with the help of digital technologies and mobile working options. 69.1 per cent of all respondents with children in the household agree that digitalisation improves work-life balance.

In fact, the possibilities of mobile working are used much more in Germany today than they were a few years ago, because the Covid-19 pandemic has led to a significant and sustainable change in working conditions in Germany, shows a study by the Ifo Institute. The eco Association welcomes this development. “Making work more flexible with the help of digital technologies increases productivity and job satisfaction,” comments Lucia Falkenberg, CPO and spokesperson for the New Work Competence Group in the eco Association. “The Internet industry sees itself as an enabler and pioneer of mobile working. We advise companies to see flexible working conditions as a competitive advantage in the fight for urgently needed skilled workers. Companies that offer flexible working models with the help of digitalisation are more successful in attracting skilled workers.”

Internet industry as part of the solution

The Internet industry has thus proven to be part of the solution to an urgent societal challenge in the Covid-19 pandemic. It is part of the solution to many challenges we will have to face in the coming years, be it coping with climate change, dealing with demographic change or even the constant struggle for democracy and participation around the world.

The eco initiative #Join the Solution: We are part of the solution – the Internet industry presents digital solutions that illuminate the positive impact of digitalisation: Whether it’s CO2 reduction through green IT and green coding in the fight against climate change, Smart City concepts that make our cities more liveable, resource-friendly and energy-efficient, health care technologies that diagnose cancer at an early stage on the basis of artificial intelligence, or digital platforms that promote social cohesion and humanitarian purposes.
