The View from Brussels # 30-2026

News, Publications and Consultations from the Past Week

News CW 34 (17/08/2026-23/08/2026)

Cybersecurity: Politico reports about the “wobbly rollout” of the NIS2 Directive and lists a few surprising examples for “critical infrastructure” like ice cream makers, chewing gum wholesalers, Christmas lights manufacturers, large schools with solar panel installations, or landlords with many apartments which pass a cable or internet connection on to their tenants through service charges.

AI: At a World Economic Forum event in Geneva, European Central Bank chief Christine Lagarde stressed that Europe couldn’t afford to miss out on the artificial intelligence revolution, and that European companies needed to scale up their operations.

Media: According to an updated draft of the revised General Block Exemption Regulation (GBER) obtained by Politico, EU countries will be able to provide funding to small- and medium-sized local independent media outlets without formal vetting by the EU. The digitalization of press publications/transitioning to digital content is one of the possible cultural objectives, the SMEs could fulfil.
