The View from Brussels #18-2026

News, Publications and Consultations from the Past Week

News CW 19 (04-10.05.2026)

Telecommunications: The European Union – represented by the European Commission – has become the Global Coalition on Telecommunications (GCOT) first strategic partner. It will support the members (Australia, Canada, Finland, Japan, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States of America), contributing to international collaboration on the development of next generation telecommunication infrastructure.

Digital Partnership: During the fourth meeting of the EU-Japan Digital Partnership Council, the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology and the Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications signed a cooperation arrangement on the enforcement of regulations for digital platforms. In addition, agreement was reached to deepen cooperation in the areas of data, AI, quantum, semiconductors and digital infrastructure.

AI: The European Parliament and the Council of the EU have reached an agreement on simplifying AI regulations to promote innovation, as well as banning “nudification” apps. The application of the rules for systems used in certain high-risk areas – including biometrics, critical infrastructure, education, employment, migration, asylum and border control – will apply from December 2027. The regulations for systems integrated into products such as lifts or toys will come into force in August 2028. Politico reports on a mixed reception.

AI: The European Commission has published a consultation on the draft guidelines for implementing transparency obligations for certain AI systems. Feedback is welcome until 3 June 2026.

Data Protection: The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) has published its report for the year 2025.
