News, Publications and Consultations from the Past Week

News CW 06 (02-08.02.2026)

Data Act: The EU Commission has published draft guidelines for reasonable compensation pursuant to Article 9 of the Data Act as part of a consultation. The provision contains guidelines for calculating compensation for data sharing. Feedback on the draft can be submitted until 20 February 2026.

AI: The second International AI Safety Report has been published. The expert report deals with the capabilities and risks of general-purpose AI systems.

Media freedom: The EU Commission has published guidelines on Article 18 of the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA). The standard contains requirements on the content of media service providers on very large online platforms and the implementation of a corresponding declaration function.

Submarine data cables: The EU is investing €347 million in the security and resilience of deep-sea cables.

DMA: The EU Commission has decided that Apple Ads and Apple Maps do not fall under the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Social media: Spanish Prime Minister Pedro SĂĄnchez has announced that his government plans will ban children under the age of 16 from accessing social media.

Digital tax: Members of the European Parliament have spoken out in favour of introducing a digital tax or digital levy. The idea had been put on hold by the European Commission during negotiations on a trade agreement with the US.
