Network operators: Henna Virkkunen, EU’s Commission Executive Vice-President and Commissioner for Tech Sovereignty, spoke out in favour of a consolidated European telecommunications market at a meeting of EU telecommunications ministers on 6 December. Until now, Virkkunen’s political stance has been the subject of speculation, as she remained largely reserved in her written responses to the EU Parliament and during her confirmation hearings. TikTok receives Commission order on data security: The European Commission is increasing its scrutiny of TikTok over its role in the Romanian presidential election. In a recent development, the European Commission has ordered the video-sharing app to “preserve internal documents and information” on the workings of its recommender system and how it handles manipulation risks. Furthermore, TikTok is obliged to store data on breaches of its ban on political advertising. The order encompasses all national elections – not just the Romanian ones – and runs until March.
