Draghi report: Mario Draghi’s report warns that weak productivity is an “existential challenge” for Europe, endangering its leadership in technology, its climate goals and its global position. Europe is lagging behind the US, especially in the technology sector, and must promote innovation in the fields of artificial intelligence and clean technologies. Draghi calls for better coordination in decarbonisation and more investment to achieve economic and ecological goals. (EU Commission) (Euractiv.com)
Telco deregulation debate: Former Italian Minister Presidents Enrico Letta and Mario Draghi recently proposed to deregulate the European telecoms industry to promote competition. However, the think tank Centre on Regulation in Europe (CERRE) expresses concerns and warns of possible risks. (Euractiv.com)
AI Board: The first high-level meeting of the upcoming EU AI Board took place on 19 June in preparation for the implementation of the AI Act. Although the AI Act will not come into force until August, the meeting served to prepare for its implementation. Topics included the strategic vision, national approaches to supervision and the organisation of the Board, including its mandate, decision-making processes and working groups. Delegates from the EU Member States, the European Data Protection Supervisor and EFTA states took part. (EU Commission)
CSAM Regulation: The new compromise text of the Hungarian EU Council Presidency on the law against online child sexual abuse material (CSAM) focuses on known material in order to mitigate privacy concerns. Detection orders only concern known content, and the roles of the EU Centre and the Coordinating Authority have been adjusted. In addition, the requirement to detect new content has been removed.
