Global AI agreement: On 5 September, the EU, the UK, the US and Israel signed the world’s first treaty on the protection of human rights in AI technology in Vilnius. However, the treaty has been criticised by civil society organisations as it is considered to have been watered down due to the exclusion of the private sector and numerous exceptions. EU Commission seeks senior AI advisor: The European Commission has published an internal job advertisement for a lead scientific advisor for artificial intelligence, causing a stir in Brussels. The position is based within the Directorate-General CNECT and is intended to oversee technological development in relation to general AI models such as ChatGPT. Critics, including MEPs, have criticised the fact that the position was not advertised externally. (Euractiv.com)

CSAM Regulation: The Hungarian proposal for combatting online child abuse meets with resistance. At the meeting of EU Member States on 4 September 2024, it became clear that the Hungarian draft law to combat online child sexual abuse material (CSAM) continues to encounter opposition. Although Hungary aims to reach a consensus by October, some Member States are not in favour of the latest approach. (Euractiv.com)
