14 April 2016 – Today the European Parliament approved the new general data protection regulation, which will directly apply in all 28 Member States.
Oliver Süme, eco Head of Policy & Law, comments:
“A common European data protection law is an absolute locational advantage in the competition among the digital markets of the future and an important step for Europe. This modernization of European data protection law now gives us the chance to overcome the differences in implementation and application of the existing legal framework between the Member States. The data protection regulation that the European Parliament has just ratified allows for a fair balance between the needs and interests of civil rights and commercial data processing.”
On 25 January 2012, the European Commission first presented its proposal for a new European data protection law; the general data protection regulation. This regulation will directly apply in all Member States and, after years of debate and discussion, finally replace the data protection directive 95/46/EC, passed in 1995.
