News CW 31 (27/07/2026 – 02/08/2026)
Cybersecurity: The European Commission has published (non-binding) guidance on the application
of the Cyber Resilience Act. It clarifies which products fall within the scope of the Act, what consti
tutes a substantial modification, how support periods should be understood, and how to meet re
porting obligations and risk assessment requirements. The Cyber Resilience Act’s main obligations
start applying on 11/12/2027, while reporting obligations already apply from 11/09/2026.
AI: According to Euractiv, the official launch of the EU database for high-risk AI systems was post
poned to the third quarter of 2027. There seems to be confusion as to when companies are sup
posed to start registering high-risk systems due to the Digital Omnibus.
Social Media: The Austrian federal government has agreed on a ban on social media for children
under the age of 14. From 2027, social networks and video platforms will only be usable after strict
age verification. The corresponding amendment to the Audiovisual Services Act has been sent for
consultation and to the European Commission for notification.
AI: The EU has launched a call for tenders to establish up to seven AI Gigafactories across Europe.
The call is supported by up to €10 billion in EU and national funding and closes on 12/11/2026.
AI: The enforcement of the AI Act started on 02/08/2026. The new transparency rules requiring cer
tain AI systems to tell users when they are interacting with AI and when content has been gener
ated or altered by it started to apply on the same date. Politico provides insights on the AI Office
team and reports about a major hiring push.
