The View from Brussels #22-2026

News, Publications and Consultations from the Past Week

News for CW 23 (01/06/2026 – 07/06/2026)

AI: The European Commission has established two bodies to support the Commission’s AI Office and national public authorities in enforcing the AI Act. The Scientific Panel, comprising 60 experts, will focus on general-purpose AI models and systems, systemic risks, model classification, assessment methods and cross-border market surveillance. The Advisory Forum has 174 members and will address, among other things, standardisation and challenges in implementing the AI Act.

AI: The European Commission has appointed Jim Hagemann Snabe as Special Representative for Industrial Artificial Intelligence. Until 31/03/2027, he will advise Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Executive Vice-President for Technological Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, Henna Virkkunen, on a pro bono basis. Critics have raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest because Hagemann Snabe serves as Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Siemens.

Technological sovereignty: The European Commission has presented its package on Europe’s technological sovereignty. It comprises the Chips Act 2.0, the Cloud and AI Development Act, an open-source strategy and a strategic roadmap for digitalisation and AI in the energy sector. Politico reports on criticism from various quarters.

Chips: Maroš Šefčovič, Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security; Interinstitutional Relations and Transparency, has called for a new diversification instrument designed to ensure that industry is not dependent on single sources of supply in sensitive sectors such as chips and rare earths.
