Whether online shopping, streaming Christmas classics or digital Christmas greetings – for many people, mobile phones, tablets and the like also play a decisive role during the festive season. A recent survey conducted by Civey* on behalf of the eco – Association of the Internet Industry shows how digitally Germany spends Christmas.
Digital Christmas helpers
Almost 40% of respondents use digital devices to shop online for gifts or decorations – the most common use of digital helpers during the preparations. Recipes and cooking ideas are also very popular: around 22% look online for inspiration for the festive meal. Digital wish lists and planning apps are a welcome relief for some, while a good 11% appreciate sharing Christmas preparations via digital channels.
Streaming, social media and virtual family gatherings
The survey shows that digital entertainment and communication play a central role during the festive season. Around 30.8% of respondents stream films, series or music to get into the festive spirit. Social media is also an important part of the festive season for many: around 27% use digital platforms to send Christmas greetings or post the highlights of the holidays. Video calls are particularly popular with families – around 17.5% plan to see their loved ones virtually.
In contrast, playing online games together is less popular: only 6% of respondents said that digital games were part of their festive tradition.
It’s all in the mix
For many families – especially those with children – a balanced mix of digital and traditional activities at Christmas is crucial. Digital offerings such as streaming or apps provide entertainment and make planning easier, but they can be perfectly combined with classic alternatives: baking biscuits together, playing board games or taking a cosy winter walk offer a valuable counterbalance to digital time.
“Digitalisation enriches our everyday lives and the holidays, but it should be used consciously and in a balanced way. Families in particular can integrate digital offers into their everyday lives during the holidays in a targeted way, while leaving enough space for shared experiences in the real world that promote closeness and time together,” explains Alexander Rabe, eco’s Managing Director.
