eco Helps Shape Future Topics at DIGISUSTAIN 2024

Based on the 17 UN sustainable development goals, approximately 300 speakers will share and discuss their expertise on sustainability and digitalisation on 17 stages at this year’s DIGISUSTAIN on 29-30 April 2024. Numerous representatives from the eco Association of the Internet Industry will be present, including eco’s Managing Directors Alexander Rabe and Andreas Weiss. The expected 1,000 attendiees can experience panels on topics such as digital transformation and infrastructures, European data ecosystems and IT sustainability at the “Digital and Sustainable Transformation” stage, which will be accompanied by eco on 29 April.

Driving sustainable digital transformation with efficient ecosystems

The first session, under the theme “Sustainable Digitalisation as a Solution for More Climate Protection and Economic Growth”, will begin with a keynote speech by Prof. Kristina Sinemus, Minister for Digital Strategy and Development of the State of Hesse. This will be followed by the first panel “Digital Transformation for More Sustainability: Positive Effects of Digital Technologies and Infrastructures on the Carbon Footprint of the Economy and Society” will feature representatives of the Alliance for the Strengthening of Digital Infrastructures in Germany, founded under the umbrella of eco, including Béla Waldhauser (Telehouse), Günter Eggers (NTT Global Data Centres) and Volker Ludwig (Digital Realty). The eco Alliance is committed to a strong data centre location in Germany in order to compete internationally and drive forward the digital transformation. The panel will be moderated by Sidonie Krug, Head of eco Association Communications and host of the eco podcast “Das Ohr am Netz”.

Secure and sustainable data management for a greener future

In the second session on European data ecosystems as the basis for sustainable data traffic, a panel consisting of Christina Schmidt-Holtmann (German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK)), Andreas Weiss (eco), Rainer Sträter (IONOS) and Linda Rülicke (Fraunhofer IEE) will discuss the future of European data infrastructures. The panel, moderated by Emma Wehrwein (eco), will focus on Gaia-X as a secure federated data ecosystem based on the principles of digital sovereignty, interoperability and open source.

After a lunch break, the third panel “FAME & TANGO – Two Federated Data Marketplaces –trustworthy and energy efficient – cross domains” will take place with Ernesto Troiano (GFT Italia S.r.l.), John Soldatos (INNOV-ACTS LTD), Geert Machtelinckx (SSI Fujitsu), Claudia Mertinger (SSI Fujitsu) and Ville Ollikainen (VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland), moderated by Lauresha Memeti (eco).

Reducing emissions with cloud technologies

Michael Hase (eco) will lead the audience through the last session of the day on “Cloud Sustainability: Paths to More Sustainable IT”. In panel 4, Bernd Wagner (Google Cloud Germany), Dr Markus Noga (IONOS), Elisabeth Goos (IBM) and Thorsten Raquet (PCG) will discuss the extent to which the public cloud can act as a climate saver. This will be followed by the last panel of the conference day “GreenCoding: How cloud native software reduces the carbon footprint” with Marc Schröter (GlobalDatanet), Sebastian Ullrich (Protos), Yelle Lieder (Adesso) and Christine Regitz (SAP).
