“And the rest is history” – Europe’s participation in the birth of ICANN: Interview with Christopher Wilkinson, EURid
Meet the movers and shakers of the Internet world in the new podcast series from eco International – Talking Heads. In this series, we explore topics with selected specialists, and look at the history and the future of the eco Association, in celebration of eco’s 20th anniversary.
Listen in to the first episode in eco International’s new series: Christopher Wilkinson from EURid takes us back in time to the first international negotiations on Internet administration, to a time when it was realized that the “one man show with a notebook keeping the protocols and the addresses of the existing top level domains” was no longer sustainable. Listen to his stories about the beginnings of ICANN, about the negotiations to have representation from countries outside of the US, about his memories of the early days of the eco Association, and about why he sees association work as just as important now as it was at the formation of the Internet.
Christopher Wilkinson is a Member of the Board at EURid, the registry for the .eu top-level domain, has worked for over 30 years for the EU Commission with a focus on telecommunications and the Internet, and was secretary of the ICANN Governmental Advisory Committee.
