In late October this year, more than 2,500 international participants from all over the world took part in the ICANN78 meeting in Hamburg. The shared goal was to ensure that the Internet continues to be securely usable for everyone according to clear rules. What is also increasingly evident to ICANN is that gender equality is a core factor for upgrading the innovative and secure Internet. One topic therefore pursued at the ICANN78 conference was entitled, “DNS Women – Expanding Our Impact”, a session in which eco Association had the privilege to take part in.

At the age of 15, ten times fewer girls than boys consider taking up a technical profession. In order to counteract this imbalance, to provide impetus to the debate, and to offer recommendations for companies, policymakers, educators and parents, eco - Association of the Internet Industry has published a white paper entitled: "Girls in Tech: A Call to Action" for Girls' Day on 28 April.

Women face gender-specific bias in the workplace far more often than men. These are the results of a survey conducted throughout Germany by eco – Association of the Internet Industry in cooperation with the market and opinion research institute Civey*.

“As a digital association, the promotion of women and diversity is a key issue for eco in order to ensure the future viability of Germany as a digital location,” says Oliver Süme, Chair of the eco Association.

Today, eco celebrates women who are moving and shaking the Internet industry and making the Internet a better place to be. As Director eco International, Lars Steffen coordinates the international activities of the eco Association and is the contact person for member companies from the domain industry. In this interview with the eco #LiT – Ladies in Tech Initiative, he talks about his daily work, ICANN78, and highlights what’s great about his international team.

Oliver Süme has been reinstated as Chair of the Board of eco – Association of the Internet Industry. At the eco Annual General Meeting which took place in Cologne on 30 September 2021, the Hamburg-based attorney-at-law and partner of the law firm Fieldfisher was unanimously re-elected to the Board. So too were the other Board members Klaus Landefeld, Felix Höger and Professor Dr Norbert Pohlmann.

The IT industry needs female reinforcement. This is the opinion of over 60 percent of German citizens, according to the results of a survey by eco – Association of the Internet Industry, conducted in cooperation with the market and opinion research institute Civey.

Promoting women in tech should not be about fixing women – it means fixing structures in a way that will benefit everyone, reports Lucia Falkenberg from eco.
