eco: New EU Parliament Must Drive Forward the Digital Single Market

The new EU Parliament will be formally constituted on 2 July. In this context, eco Chair Oliver Süme emphasizes how important a fast-track development of the Digital Single Market is for the new legislative term.

“In the now starting legislative term, I’d like to see the European Parliament acquiring serious momentum, a dedication to shaping the future, and clear decisiveness, in order to resolutely advance digital policy issues in particular. We urgently need progress in the further development of the Digital Single Market; otherwise, European companies will soon lose any potential edge over the already very strong competitors from Asia and the USA. It is precisely in highly innovative areas such as artificial intelligence that Europe must not lose any more time. This is also underlined in the Policy & Infrastructure recommendations published this week by the High Level Expert Group for AI, a group whose membership includes eco Presidency Committee member Saskia Steinacker.”

High-performance digital infrastructures are an important prerequisite for secure and reliable AI applications made in Europe. The importance of reliable digital infrastructures for the digital self-determination of Germany and Europe as industry locations is a recurrent topic of eco within the framework of the Alliance for the Strengthening of Digital Infrastructures.
