In the ongoing debate surrounding the reintroduction of data retention, eco – Association of the Internet Industry reinforces its criticism of the controversial measure:
“The indiscriminate mass storage of private IP addresses is unconstitutional and violates EU law. This was ruled by the European Court of Justice as early as 2022, and was confirmed by the German Federal Administrative Court in 2023,” says Oliver Süme, Chair of the Board at eco.
“Moreover, it regularly provides no added value in law enforcement in connection with the circumstances in which it is repeatedly demanded like a mantra.”
“I therefore recommend that the current German federal government adhere to this ruling and the position outlined in the coalition agreement, thus avoiding years of renewed legal disputes and the associated legal uncertainties,” Süme continues.
