eco Alliance Signs Up to Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact

Twenty-five companies and seventeen associations from across Europe commit to taking concrete action to make data centres climate neutral by 2030.

One year after the adoption of the EU Green Deal, leading cloud infrastructure providers and data centre operators in Europe have signed up to a joint Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact. Twenty-five companies and 17 associations – including the Alliance for the Strengthening of Digital Infrastructures in Germany, founded under the umbrella of the eco Association – have agreed to a self-regulatory initiative which will have data centres in Europe using a climate neutral approach by 2030. The industry is committed to proactively shaping and leading the transition to a climate neutral economy.

“From the perspective of our alliance, the goal to have data centres in Europe climate neutral by 2030 is the right approach and constitutes our responsibility for the future,” says Dr Béla Waldhauser, Spokesperson for the Alliance for the Strengthening of Digital Infrastructures in Germany. “We’re pleased to support the self-regulatory initiative and look forward to this European approach and the exchange with the EU Commission.”

The Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact instates a self-regulatory initiative which has been developed in cooperation with the European Commission. With it, the industry is also actively supporting the implementation of the EU Green Deal, which aims to make Europe the world’s first climate neutral continent by 2050, as well as the European Data Strategy, which intends to have made data centres climate neutral by 2030.

“Citizens across Europe use ever more technology to go about their daily lives and want this technology, also to help secure a sustainable future for people and planet,” says Frans Timmermans, European Commission Executive Vice-President. “Today’s pledge from important parts of the data industry constitutes a promise to society and offers a welcome first step towards achieving our common ambitions for a smart and sustainable future.”
