AI: The European Commission has published the first draft of the Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content. This is intended to support providers and users in complying with the labelling requirements under Article 50 of the AI Act, which will come into force in August 2026.

Social media: Ireland plans to push for EU-wide rules on age verification and a ban on children, based on the Australian model, during its Council Presidency in the second half of year. It also wants to crack down on anonymous „keyboard warriors“ who spread disinformation and hatred online.

Chat controls: The EU Commission has proposed extending the exemption allowing voluntary chat controls, which expires in April 2026, for two years.

Gaming: As part of the planned Digital Fairness Act, the European Commission will also address loot boxes and other addictive design practices. The draft is expected at the end of 2026.

Digital euro: The Council of the European Union has defined its position on the digital euro. It should be available online and offline, enable a high level of privacy, and exist alongside other means of payment.

AI: The European Commission is considering relaxing the rules on artificial intelligence in medical devices.

Digital Europe: The European Commission has published the interim evaluation of the Digital Europe programme.

Creative Europe: The European Commission has published  the final evaluation of the Creative Europe programme (2014-2020) and the interim evaluation of the current programme.

Transatlantic relations: Relations between the EU and the US remain tense. The dispute continues to centre on the EU’s digital rules and their enforcement against American companies. Most recently, entry bans were imposed on, among others, former EU Commissioner Thierry Breton, who is considered the architect of the DSA, and the two managing directors of the German non-profit HateAid.
