Together, they were responsible for developing the proposal which ultimately led to ICANN becoming independent of the US government. The winners received the award for their extraordinary personal contribution at a festive ceremony on Saturday, 5 November 2016, during the kick-off event for the 57th ICANN Meeting in Hyderabad, India.

Thomas Rickert, Director of the eco Competence Group Names & Numbers, is delighted by the prize. “The IANA Stewardship Transition showed very impressively that representatives from industry, civil society, academia, and governments can solve complex global issues in a consensus-based manner,” said the German lawyer. “I am pleased that I could be involved in this unique, historic process on behalf of eco members.”

ICANN was successfully awarded its independence from the American government on 1 October 2016. With this change, for the first time since its establishment in 1998, a multi-stakeholder community now supervises and administers the so-called Root Zone, which is responsible for the global reachability of domain names.
