eco’s Lars Steffen has been appointed Co-Coordinator of the Community Outreach Project Group as part of the Universal Acceptance Steering Group. In this role, he will work closely with his co-lead, Christian Dawson, from the i2Coalition.
The Universal Acceptance Steering Group concentrates on topics related to the universal acceptance of all domain names – for example, the recently rolled-out Internationalized Domain Names (IDN) using a range of different alphabets (Han, Cyrillic, Hangul, Thai, Arabic, Hebrew and Greek). Although domain names already exist in these alphabets, not all online portals are yet primed for opening a user account with one of the new email addresses, for example.
Even the new generic Top-Level-Domains (e.g. the regional TLDs, like .london, or the branch TLDs, like .science) have difficulty being accepted on all platforms and in all online portals. The UASG is striving for Universal Acceptance for these many new domain names, and the Community Outreach group has the task of identifying the messages, finding effective communication channels, and then getting the messages into the community.
The Universal Acceptance Steering Group is an Internet community initiative that was founded in February 2015 and tasked with undertaking activities that will effectively promote the Universal Acceptance of all valid domain names and email addresses. The group is made up of members from more than 120 companies (including Apple, GoDaddy, Google, Microsoft and Verisign), governments and community groups. The UASG receives significant financial and administrative support from ICANN.
