Is encryption a tool or a philosophy? Interview with David Snead, I2Coalition
Meet the movers and shakers of the Internet world in the new podcast series from eco International – Talking Heads. In this series, we explore topics with selected specialists, and look at the history and the future of the eco Association, in celebration of eco’s 20th anniversary.
In this second episode of Talking Heads, David Snead, Vice-Chairman and Co-founder of the I2Coalition, answers the question “is encryption a tool or a philosophy?” He discusses the cultural differences in attitudes to privacy, and the challenges this creates for developing international standards for topics like data protection and encryption. He looks at encryption as a mechanism for users to take control of their data, and comments on the need to make encyption more user-friendly. At the same time, he sees the potential for cryptography to be used as a customer tool for infrastructure providers for marketing and enhancing their services.
This interview was made after David’s moderation of a panel discussion on Data Privacy at the World Hosting Days Global 2015, sponsored by Open Xchange. Present in the lively panel discussion were: Rafael Laguna from Open-Xchange, Raimund Genes from Trend Micro, Thorsten Kraft from the eco Association, the Jens Kubieziel from Tor, and Sarah Harrison from WikiLeaks.
