Dominic Haussmann on Ensuring IT Security in the Cloud

Dominic Haussmann is a Specialist Solutions Engineer – Zero Trust at Cloudflare and has more than 15 years of experience in IT security. He has a comprehensive understanding of the current threat landscape and is dedicated to helping companies strengthen their security infrastructure and effectively defend against cyberattacks. At this year’s Internet Security Days on 10 and 11 September, he will be delivering the keynote, “Detecting and Defending Against Cyber Threats – Staying One Step Ahead with the Connectivity Cloud”.

How can companies ensure that their data in the cloud is protected against unauthorised access?

Securing data in the cloud crucially depends on the platform and the underlying security concept. Just like in soccer, it’s the teamwork of the team that makes the difference. It’s not only important to use leading technologies, but above all how effectively they work together. In today’s cloud landscape, this integration is crucial. Cloudflare offers the ideal platform where—continuing with the soccer analogy—the team is at the centre. With the Connectivity Cloud, Cloudflare ensures that all components—ranging from the network to WAF (Web Application Firewall), DDoS protection, and comprehensive Zero Trust security—work together seamlessly to optimally secure customer data.

What measures should be taken to ensure that cloud service providers implement robust security protocols and keep them regularly updated?

To effectively secure our customers’ complex cloud environments, it is essential to know exactly what needs to be protected. This is the only way to develop the appropriate strategy. Which services interact with each other? How do my applications communicate? And where is my data located? These questions are crucial to establishing the right security concept. Transparency is of the utmost importance here. This is where our platform comes into play: by seamlessly interacting all components, essential information can be provided precisely and can ultimately ensure comprehensive security. This ensures complete end-to-end security.

What risks are associated with the use of cloud computing and how can these be minimised through a solid security strategy?

From our point of view, the risks of cloud computing lie primarily in the lack of security expertise among developers and operators. Expert knowledge is often required, which is only available to a limited extent or not at all due to the shortage of skilled workers. In addition, many security experts today have to work with a variety of different security systems. However, it is difficult, if not impossible, to maintain a high level of expertise in all these solutions. This is where Cloudflare’s platform comes in with its platform to overcome these challenges and provide the best possible support for companies.

Thank you for the interview, Mr Haussmann!
