Data Centers at the Intersection of Trust, Efficiency, and Scale

This second part of the dotmagazine issue on data centres and digital infrastructure arrives at a pivotal moment. Data centres are no longer static facilities. They are now intelligent, interconnected, and policy-driven environments at the core of today’s digital ecosystem. As AI, cloud computing, and data-intensive applications continue to grow in scale, the challenge now extends beyond capacity to how infrastructure is governed, secured, and connected in real time.

Security, governance and trust

Security and governance are emerging as foundational design principles. Daniel Theis of the Institute for Internet Security (if(is)) and Prof. Dr. Norbert Pohlmann, eco Association Board Member and Managing Director of if(is), highlight how Zero Trust and federation are becoming essential in cloud-edge environments, where trust must be continuously verified rather than assumed. This shift reflects a broader transition from perimeter-based security to distributed trust models.

This perspective is reinforced by Michael Hase, Manager of EuroCloud Deutschland at eco, who outlines how federated data spaces enable sovereign data exchange while reducing dependency on centralised platforms. Together, these approaches signal a move towards infrastructure that processes data and embeds trust, compliance and sovereignty at its core.

Operational intelligence and automation

Building on this foundation, operational intelligence emerges as a key differentiator. Joerg Hesselink, founder and CEO of DC Smarter, demonstrates how ITAM digital twins provide real-time visibility across distributed environments, reducing errors, eliminating data silos and streamlining audits. James Kirkwood, Technical Account Director at EkkoSense, shows how AI-powered digital twins are improving energy efficiency. In one example, TelefĂłnica reduced cooling-related energy consumption by up to 20 per cent, while strengthening resilience and capacity planning. These developments illustrate how data centre operations are becoming more transparent, data-driven and automated.

Connectivity, interconnection, and regulatory compliance

At the same time, connectivity and ecosystem participation are redefining competitiveness. Mareike Jacobshagen, Senior Manager Strategic Programmes at DE-CIX, introduces the Connected Site model as a low-barrier entry into global interconnection ecosystems. This allows operators to scale their services in response to demand for AI and the cloud without making significant upfront investments. The shift towards flexible, on-demand interconnection reflects a broader move across the industry towards infrastructure that can adapt as quickly as the workloads it supports.

In parallel, governance itself is shifting towards enabling continuous capability rather than being a static requirement. Thomas PfĂĽtzenreuter, Managing Director of Securance-iAP GmbH, argues that internal control systems are now vital for demonstrating operational resilience and complying with regulations such as NIS2, DORA and the EU AI Act.

Taken together, these contributions point to a clear direction: the future of data centres lies in the convergence of verifiable trust, operational intelligence, and seamless interconnection. Infrastructure must keep pace with digital growth while enabling new forms of scale and control.
