CloudFest 2024 with Panel on DNS Abuse

The eco Association will be on-site when CloudFest celebrates its 20th anniversary under the motto “Nations of the Cloud” at Europa-Park in Rust, Germany.

More than 8,000 participants are expected to attend CloudFest 2024, which will once again take place at Europa-Park in Rust from 18 to 21 March. One of the topics of concern to the cloud and hosting industry is DNS abuse, i.e. attempts to misuse the Domain Name System. The panel “DNS Abuse Mitigation – Recent Developments and Next Steps in Industry Engagement”, moderated by eco Director Names & Numbers Thomas Rickert, will take place on Wednesday, 20 March at 15:40 on the NameStudio API Arena Stage. Among others, Brian Lonergan from Identity Digital, Neal McPherson from IONOS, Paul Mockapetris from Threatstop and Keith Drazek from Verisgn will explain key issues of DNS protection.

In addition to the top 5 DNS exploits – botnets, malware, pharming, phishing and spam – a wider range of threats are gaining prominence. What should the domain industry do to respond more quickly to threats? What is the ICANN’s role in this context and what other forums do we need to facilitate dialogue?

In the morning, Keith Drazek and Thomas Rickert also invite you to the Bar Camp Session “Online Harm Mitigation – Enhanced DNS Industry Collaboration” at 11:00 to discuss these and other questions with participants.

Many companies are taking a reactive rather than a proactive approach to combating DNS abuse. Rather than more regulation by legislators, the industry wants to focus on self-regulation, which is particularly promising in a global environment. For some time now, we have seen increasing pressure on the domain industry to take action against online abuse by blocking domain names. This is also pushing ICANN to take a more active role in combating DNS abuse.
