How connectivity, edge computing and data centres form the basis of digital innovation
Munich shines far beyond the borders of the Free State as one of Europe’s most dynamic and attractive high-tech locations. An exclusive evening exploring sovereignty, resilience and Bavaria’s ‘AI turbo’.
Together with our member organisation and host Telefónica, eco – Association of the Internet Industry invites you to an exclusive, high-profile after-work event on the top floor of the striking O2 Tower. The focus will be on the strategic integration of network infrastructure, edge computing and data centres as the foundation of Bavaria’s digital future.
Before the evening programme begins, participants will also have the opportunity to gain exclusive insights into the Telefónica Test Lab in Munich-Freimann. The guided tour will demonstrate how digital infrastructure is tested, secured and further developed under realistic conditions – from end devices and mobile networks to connectivity and voice services, as well as a fully equipped data centre test environment.
The Free State’s digital backbone: infrastructure as a driver of innovation
Bavaria is far more than a leading business location – it is a high-performance, integrated ecosystem comprising connectivity, edge infrastructure and data centres. This interaction forms the basis for innovation, value creation and digital sovereignty. The figures speak for themselves:
- Growth & capacity: With more than 370 data centres and an installed IT capacity of around 420 MW, the Free State has recorded growth of approximately 30 per cent since 2020.
- Connected infrastructure: High-performance fibre-optic networks, 5G and edge locations enable data to be processed in real time – directly where it is generated.
- Leading position in AI & HPC: Bavaria plays a leading role in high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence, accounting for more than 20 per cent of Germany’s total capacity. The ‘AI turbo’ is having a direct impact at the infrastructure level.
Digital Sovereignty and Resilience ‘Made in Bavaria’
In times of geopolitical tension and rapidly growing data flows, control over digital infrastructure is becoming a key strategic resource. Bavaria is focusing on a resilient, decentralised interplay between networks, edge computing and data centres:
- Resilience through distribution: Decentralised edge locations complement central data centres, increasing both resilience and performance.
- Sovereignty through infrastructure: Local data processing strengthens SMEs, start-ups and research alike.
- Location advantage: Bavaria’s geographical location and low risk of natural disasters create ideal conditions for highly available infrastructure.
These factors form the basis for digital sovereignty, innovation and modern administrative processes.

Human-Centred Security Lab
The real-world laboratory demonstrates how a secure access process for critical infrastructure can be designed, using a data centre as an example. This requires a wide range of specialised solutions and a holistic approach to integration.
At Marienpark Berlin, technologies aimed specifically at improving the resilience of our society are being promoted. In collaboration with Rohde & Schwarz, e-shelter security and essentry, a space has been created in which selected technologies can be tested under realistic conditions and experienced first-hand by professionals and users.
