Is the Internet industry on track for growth?
The layer model developed by eco & Arthur D. Little analyses the development of individual layers and segments
The Internet industry has developed into an important industry in Germany. But what is the current situation and what does the future hold for the industry in times of a generally shrinking German economy? What challenges will data centres and telecommunications networks in particular face? And are digital infrastructures in Germany prepared for the AI revolution? These and other aspects relating to the development of digital markets in Germany over the next five years are examined in a new study by eco – Association of the Internet Industry and Arthur D. Little, carried out in cooperation with Digital Realty, NetCologne, and the Alliance for the Strengthening of Digital Infrastructures in Germany, which was founded under the umbrella of the eco Association.
Since 2008, the eco Association and the Arthur D. Little management consultancy have been analysing the development of the Internet industry in Germany. Individual segments of the industry are examined using a layer model – most recently in studies from 2020 and 2023 with forecasts up to 2025. The individual segments were re-examined in the new study. Given the central importance of digital infrastructures for innovation, competitiveness and digital sovereignty, this year's study places a special focus on data centres and telecommunications networks.
