Negotiations about a new agreement replacing the Safe Harbor between Europe and America are ‘well on their way’, according to Edith Ramirez, Chairwoman of the Federal Trade Commission. ‘I’m optimistic that we’re going to be able to find a solution to this, I’m hoping by the end of this month,’ she said while appearing at the trade show CES. European counterparts were quoted as being equally ‘confident’ that a deal will be reached by the end of January.
Her European colleagues, one of whom has said she is ‘confident’ that a deal will be reached by an end-of-January deadline, match Ramirez’s optimism.
Ramirez also commented on speculations that European regulators were tough on American companies because they are industry leaders compared to their European competitors: ‘I think there’s a lot of rhetoric that you hear on the European side, but I work very closely, and we as an agency work very closely with European commissioners.’
