We wish you a happy and successful year 2025! In our first issue of the year, we explore the upcoming political changes within Germany and around the world.

This week, Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 47th president of the United States of America. In this context, Oliver Süme, Chair of the Board of eco, highlighted the importance of further cooperation and transatlantic data exchange in the future. It is now the responsibility of politicians on both sides of the Atlantic to reinforce their shared values and principles in order to strengthen their political and economic ties.

While political affairs in the USA resume, Germany is gearing up for its federal elections on 23 February 2025. eco’s Managing Director, Alexander Rabe, shared his experience as a former member of the German “Digital Strategy Advisory Board” in a guest commentary in the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” dossier. He pointed out several key elements that should be included in an Agenda for Digital Germany 2030. A more detailed account of what eco expects from the future federal government can be found in the Internet Policy Agenda 2025.

In this issue, we also introduce Philipp Ehmann who has recently taken over the leadership of the eco Capital Office and is now responsible for the Policy, Law & Regulations division. Additional topics covered include eco’s opposition to the reintroduction of data retention, a survey on the influence of digital media on voters’ opinions and critical trends in cybersecurity in 2025.
