On Tuesday, Ursula von der Leyen presented her plan for the new EU Commission. Digital issues, internal and external security, and the rule of law will now fall under the responsibility of the Finnish politician Henna Virkkunen. The plan now requires approval from the European Parliament.

In light of this, eco – Association of the Internet Industry is calling for a stronger focus on digital policy and the expansion of Europe’s digital infrastructure. For Oliver Süme, Chair of the Board at eco, a robust European digital single market is crucial to ensure the global competitiveness of both Germany and Europe: “In the coming years, European digital policy must be consistently strengthened to secure Europe’s global competitiveness,” says Süme. He emphasises the need for clear political frameworks that foster innovation and establish a unified legal structure. Only with such a foundation can digitalisation be sustainably advanced across all sectors of the economy.

eco has published its own agenda for the Digital Policy for Europe 2024 – 2029. In eight fields of action, the association formulates the industry’s key demands for European digital policy in the coming legislative term.

Additionally, in this issue, we cover topics such as the Expansion of the Competencies of German Security Authorities: eco Calls for Precise Protective Measures and a Public Debate, as well as the eco Alliance for the Strengthening of Digital Infrastructures Appeals: Federal Budget and Growth Initiative Must Drive Expansion of the Digital Ecosystem at All Levels. We also provide a comprehensive review of the Internet Security Days.
