News, Publications and Consultations from the Past Week
News CW 10 (04.03.2024-10.03.2024)
Cybersecurity: The Cyber Solidarity Act, which was informally agreed upon with the Belgian Presidency of the Council on Wednesday, aims to build a more resilient, collective EU response against cyber threats. The main objectives include strengthening EU-wide detection of cyber threats, enhancing preparedness and response capabilities, and fostering European technological sovereignty in cybersecurity. This is to be primarily achieved through a pan-European network of National Cyber Hubs and by establishing a Cyber Emergency Mechanism and a European Cybersecurity Mechanism. (EP)
Competition: The EU Commission announced on Monday a 1.8 billion Euro fine for Apple. Apple was accused of exploiting its dominant market position by distributing music streaming applications and thus breaching EU competition rules. This is the third-largest fine ever imposed against a company for breaching the EU rules. The Commission found that due to Apple’s restrictions, app developers were prohibited from informing iOS users about alternative and more affordable music subscription services outside the app. (Euractiv)
DSA: The three pornography websites included on the Digital Services Act’s (DSA) very large online platforms list of very large online platforms (VLOPs) are suing the EU over their new obligations. According to the website operator Aylo, the European Commission erred in its calculation of the number of users. Aylo also criticises the requirement under Article 39 DSA pursuant to which a VLOP’s repository must be made publicly accessible. (Euractiv)
