In his role as Managing Director of the eco Association, Alexander Rabe is responsible for the public image of the association from the strategic content and communicative perspectives, in its Berlin, Brussels, Cologne, and Munich locations.
With more than 1,100 member companies, eco is the largest Internet industry association in Europe. Since 1995, eco has been instrumental in shaping the development of the Internet in Germany, and fostering new technologies and infrastructures.
eco actively contributes to shaping the legislative framework conditions for the innovation-friendly and at the same time ethically-oriented digital transformation of the economy and society.
Rabe is a co-initiator of the “Alliance for the Strengthening of Digital Infrastructures in Germany”, a member initiative led by eco, supported by companies such as SIEMENS, Netcologne, DE-CIX, and the Fraunhofer Group IUK-Technologie.
Rabe came to eco in 2016 as Head of the Policy, Law & Regulations division, and in this role led the Capital Office in the heart of Berlin and also in the branch office in Brussels.
Since then, Rabe has represented eco amongst other things at the Digital Summit of the German Federal Government in dealings with the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI), and the Digital Sovereignty Focus Group of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs (BMWi).
From 2012 to 2016, Alexander Rabe occupied a range of positions at the German Society for Informatics (GI), the largest specialist society of computer scientists in the German-speaking world, with around 20,000 members. The most recent of these positions was that of Managing Director. In this role, he led the GI offices in Bonn and Berlin.
Since standing down as Managing Director of the GI, Rabe has remained a member and deputy spokesperson of the regional group Berlin/Brandenburg; he is also active for eco in the Economic Advisory Council of the GI and is a member of the GI Presidium Working Group IT Training and Further Education.
Between 2010 and 2016, Alexander Rabe was Managing Director of the German Informatics Academy, which has been active for more than 25 years in the area of knowledge transfer for specialists and leaders in IT and informatics.
From 2008 – 2010, Rabe was Consultant for the institute management at the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering (IESE) in Kaiserslautern and was Assistant to the Board of the Fraunhofer IuK Group, Europe’s largest consortium of applied research institutes.
From 2005 – 2008, Rabe worked for Deutsche Telekom AG Laboratories (T-Labs) in Berlin in the area of Customer, Behavior & Needs, at the interface between research and industry.
Since 2016, Alexander Rabe has a seat on the advisory board “Market Watchdog of the Digital World” of the Federation of German Consumer Organizations (VBZV).
Rabe is also a member of the advisory board of the BMWi-funded program “SME 4.0 Competence Center IT Industry” and a member of the strategic platform ITC of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
In the context of the BMBF Science Year 2019, Alexander Rabe is a member of the jury for the initiative “#KI50 – Artificial Intelligence yesterday, today, tomorrow.”
Rabe has also contributed his expertise in the IT area through acting as a consultant to the Austrian funding program ITC of the Future of the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG), as well as in the BMWi funding program “Smart Data Economy”.
